Bought these a couple days ago and realized I had somehow misplaced my stupid lug nut key. I religiously place it in a small compartment in the glovebox. Anyway, it's one of those uniform cylinder looking lug nuts that have a splined pattern in the middle that the key grabs onto. For a 2009 Mazda6. Dealer quoted me $55 for a small piece of metal....

Wheel shops often have them available. Also, if it's an OEM key you might convince the guys in the service dept to remove them for you.

Wheel shops.

Those "OEM" keys/locks are all made by McGard. McGard sells us master sets and we often will help a customer take off locks to use regular nuts, or we match our key to their car so they know which key to order from McGard.

(edit: sorry, meant to reply to OP. New kinja is still confusing me)

get them to take it off and replace it with a standard lug. these locks prevent nothing, might as well rid yourself of the hassel

Yup, I'd heard McGard supplied them. Guess I'll stop by a shop and ask to have them popped off. I'm eventually going to get nicer locking lugs anyway, so a temporary replacement with normal lugs wouldn't be that bad. I park on a pretty secure college campus where there are WAY nicer cars for thieves to mess with.

Thanks guys!

When we put locks on new cars off the transporters, we save the "old" lugnuts in a bucket. I often just give them away for free since I feel bad for the people who were forced to buy the car with locks on.... but we haven't had a wheel theft in a long time from a car on the lot, so there's that.

Hopefully they'll do that then.... haha. I was pissed at myself when I drove two hours to pick the wheels up and then couldn't test fit them. They're 5x114.3 and the hub bore is wide enough, but 18x10s are iffy...

Fuck wheel locks, as if they actually prevent anyone from stealing the wheels.

Do what the thieves do, get a slightly smaller deep well socket (for example, if the nuts are 19mm, use an 18mm deep well socket) and than hammer it on to the wheel lock nut. Then you just take it off like normal.

Of course you'll want to get a new set of lug nuts after all this.

easy solution for $12.

take a picture of the locked nut and send it to mcGard they can identify the key based on the picture and you can buy a new key. Why do I know this? i left the key on a wheel after a wheel change and lost it. Problem solved in two shipping days.
